Birmingham Whisky Festivals

Birmingham Whisky Festivals

It’s exciting times to drink whisky in Birmingham, or to be in Birmingham and like whisky! Not only do you lucky people have this blog (run by two Birmingham based whisky fans), you also have the Birmingham Whisky Club headed up by Amy Seton. The club meets monthly on a Thursday evening in the Old Joint Stock in the centre of Birmingham and so far has been through a fabulous range of tastings. And now for the really exciting part – the first Birmingham Whisky Festival!

Chester Whisky Festival

Chester Whisky Festival

We were delighted to be asked to officially photograph the Chester Whisky Festival 2012 by Russ who runs the Chester Whisky and Liqueur Company based in the heart of Chester (we’d heartily recommend that you pop in if you are in the area as they often have interesting samples available for tasting!) This was the second year of this up and coming whisky festival and it was well attended with around 400 people making it through the doors during a cold Saturday in the old Roman city. Due to our photographic responsibilities we have less whisky notes than usual about the day, but we will be publishing subsequent posts on the rather excellent Tomatin and Glengoyne masterclasses, and also showcasing our whisky of the day which was a fiery cracker of a dram – stay tuned!

Japanese Three Way – A Masterclass in Whisky

Japanese Three Way – A Masterclass in Whisky

This was a masterclass that I was very much looking forward too! The prospect of six Japanese whiskies from three of the biggest players in the game had been too much to resist and I willingly signed up to this event at the earliest opportunity.

Macallan Gold [The Macallan]

Macallan Gold [The Macallan]

We were delighted to have been send a fabulous looking sample of Macallan Gold. The 50ml bottle even came with its own mini cork and looked rather nice in its presentation box. We had heard a lot about this whisky – you could even say there was a little bit of controversy! Macallan were taking a brave and innovative step by removing age statements from their core range and instead were focussing on highlighting the quality of the liquid inside the bottle. The whiskies were to be unchillfiltered and uncoloured – the clear glass bottles showcasing the whisky – and the whiskies appropriately named, this one is golden in colour and Gold in name. It’s shift gives the master blender more flexibility – they can use whisky that is the appropriate quality, rather than age, and alter each batch makeup to ensure the consistency of the product. Mike thoroughly enjoyed a sample at the Midlands Whisky Show so I couldn’t wait to review it properly.

The nose was rich and sherried; I was struck with the smell of chocolate hobnobs before this developed into caramel chocolate and chocolate cheesecake. Delving further I found apple pie with heated sugar and cinnamon on top – great stuff!

The palate was lovely and fresh. The spanish sherry casks came through with a glorious spicy and rich taste. It was full of dates and Christmas dried fruits before decadent dark coco powder warmed the senses. It’s a whisky one could happily spend all night with.

The finish was long and velvety. Soft treacle toffee was present before this reduced leaving embers of fading chocolate.

Macallan have done a fabulous job here. I had not particularly enjoyed the fine oak series (only a personal opinion) but this release has certainly put me back on board! I would heartily recommend it to anyone as a cracking everyday whisky and one to open the eyes of anyone who thinks age is the be all and end all. In fact I can’t wait to try the next three releases of this new 1824 series!

The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show

The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show

There probably aren’t enough superlatives to describe today. Not only did I attend a rather fabulous masterclass (more about that on the blog very soon), but I also met up with some friends – new and old- and tried some of the best whisky around.

Midlands Whisky Festival

Midlands Whisky Festival

What a day we had! It is safe to say that the Midlands Whisky Festival rocks – it has a great location in the historic Stourbridge Town Hall, is organised by the historic Nickolls and Perks, and brought in malt fans and whisky from all over the world. It also provided us with an oppportunity to once again meet the fabulous Colin Dunn and try some spectacular Diageo Special Releases including the legendary Port Ellen!
