Suntory Cocktails in London!

Suntory Cocktails in London!

Friday was a good day!  Sharon (my wife) and I (Jon) headed down to London for a packed day of tourist and whisky related activities. We had a lovely lunch cruise on the Thames, a trip on the London Eye and dinner in Covent Garden, but what you’ll really be interested in is what we did at the Corinthia!  By rights we were lucky to be there as it was my co-blogger Mike who had won the competition ran by Alwynne of Miss Whisky – picking up a lovely bottle of Hibiki 17 and a day out in London sampling Japanese whisky and enjoying cocktails in a private lesson.  Fortunately for us Mike is a teacher, and even more fortunately it wasn’t holiday time for teachers, so he couldn’t get the time off work paving the way for Sharon and I to go down and step in!

Compass Box Rock!

Compass Box Rock!

Epic isn’t usually a word associated with whisky tastings but that’s exactly what Friday was – epic! We may have only received a fleeting glimpse of the excitement with a 30 minute tasting in Birmingham, but 8 tastings across the length of the county in 24 hours is, well, epic!  John Glaser of Compass Box and Dominic Roskrow (whisky writer) travelled from Inverness to Brighton with 6 stops inbetween in a day!  They covered almost 700 miles, brought whisky to 200 lucky individuals, had some kippers (those who read the tweets will know what I mean) and attempted to make it into the legendary Guiness Book of Records – and all this to highlight the fact that The Whisky Shop now stock Compass Box!!

Islay Festival Days Five – Seven

Islay Festival Days Five – Seven

Well, days five, six, and seven were a bit of a blur and not 100% whisky related which is why we’ll combine the posts here!  They were great fun with some great whiskies as you’ll see below!

Day Five
We went back to Ardbeg for our second visit and for our second tour hosted by Dougie which was to be a real treat. We snapped up the Ardbeg Day bottle and then set off to explore the Peat Bog with a few drams. It was another excellent adventure and we were fully entertained by more childhood and Ardbeg stories before having sandwiches, cakes and tea out of china cups on top of the bog. Oh, and we had a crack at peat cutting!  So what of the whisky we tried?

Midlands Whisky Fest! 19th May 2012

Midlands Whisky Fest! 19th May 2012

The Midlands Whisky Fest! in Stratford had been in our diaries for some time, and it was with a great sense of excitment and expectation that we set off for our second experience of the event run by the Whisky Lounge and Vinology!

W is for…

W is for…

W is definitely for W Club – The Whisky Shop’s new membership club that gives you access to limited release bottlings, great competitions and some exclusive in-store whisky!  We popped along to see Craig, manager of Birmingham’s Whisky Shop to try some of the new bottles he had.  The focus of our mission this time was a new bottle out by Glen Garioch which was bottled excessively for the Whisky Shop!  There are only 187 bottles of the Glen Garioch 1978 and as it retails at a shade under £400 this was probably going to be our only experience of it.  Our thoughts are here:

Cutty Sark Tweet Tasting

Cutty Sark Tweet Tasting

We were again fortunate enough to be invited along to the latest event in the Whisky Wire’s series of Tweet Tastings.  Up for tasting this time was a blend that we’d heard a lot about but had never tasted – Cutty Sark.  This was about to change as we were sent four generous samples of whisky including; Cutty Sark Blend, Cutty Sark 12, Cutty Sark 18 and the recently released Tam O’Shanter 25.  The tasting was again expertly led by Steve, and we were joined by Kirsteen Campbell, Master Blender at Cutty Sark who entertained us brilliantly with her insight into the whisky we were tasting as well as answering a lot of questions about the nuances of the whisky, its maturation and origins.
