The Lakes Distillery

The Lakes Distillery

The Lake District is one of the most beautiful areas of the country. It is full of rolling hills, rugged mountain tops, and an abundance of lakes. Well, to be honest, there is only one official lake in the National Park – the rest are ‘waters’ or ‘meres’ for example: Bassenthwaite is the only body of water termed ‘lake’. It is this particular lake, 8 miles north east of Keswick that excites us though as this is to be the site of the first whisky distillery in the Lake District for well over 100 years; The Lakes Distillery.

Birmingham Whisky Festival – LivingRoom Whisky Stand

Birmingham Whisky Festival – LivingRoom Whisky Stand

The Birmingham Whisky Festival is but a week away so we thought we’d share the frankly awesome whisky that we’ll be exibiting on our ‘Blogger’s Choice’ Stand at the show. We’ve selected some fabulous spirits from a range of distilleries and companies and we are excited about bringing them to you on 2 March. It is an opportunity not to be missed – some of the whiskies are sold out, never to be repeated! Just take a look at what you can try.

A visit to SMWS London (and other whisky shops)

A visit to SMWS London (and other whisky shops)

Mike and I had a day spare recently so we decided to visit ‘that London’ and follow our own whisky trail, discovering some of the best whisky shops in the city and ultimately aiming to finish up at The Scotch Malt Whisky Society for a few drams. In total we fitted in 4 whisky shops, 1 pub, and 1 SMWS bar (with a lunch stop in the fabulous Borough Market for the most amazing salt beef sandwich in the land. Fact.)

Glenfiddich Tasting [A Solera Deconstruction]

Glenfiddich Tasting [A Solera Deconstruction]

I recently had another great evening at the Soho Whisky Rooms in London. This time I was there for a deconstruction of the Glenfiddich 15 year old Solera bottling – an opportunity to examine the cask components that make up this delicious whisky in the company on Jamie Milne (Glenfiddich Brand Ambassador). Upon arrival I was handed a glass of 12 year old and set about meeting new and old friends alike – special mentions to Ben and Cat (Master of Malt), Alwynne (Miss Whisky), Marcin, Ryan, Kirsty and Fleur. Jamie was excellent throughout; very knowledgable, humorous and dealt with the banter well!

Christmas Whiskies [Birmingham Post]

Christmas Whiskies [Birmingham Post]

We were delighted to write an article for the Birmingham Post recommending our top ten drams for Christmas featuring some fabulous whiskies that we have tried over the year. Some of them are available from supermarkets, some from specialist retailers but all are available at the time of writing and all will delight this Christmas!

Bruichladdich Tasting [Nickolls and Perks]

Bruichladdich Tasting [Nickolls and Perks]

A couple of weeks ago we spent a very enjoyable evening in Stourbridge at Nickolls and Perks in the company of Craig Johnstone from Bruichladdich. For me, this was like going home – I’ve been to the Feis Ile twice and both times enjoyed Bruichladdich masterclasses from the the legend that is Jim McEwan. For Mike, this was to be a great first experience experience of a Bruichladdich tasting and a great appetiser for what awaits in May 2013.

Berry Bros & Rudd Tweet Tasting

Berry Bros & Rudd Tweet Tasting

Another fabulous tweet tasting with some lovely whisky bottled by Berry Bros & Rudd and ran in conjunction with Steve from The Whisky Wire. We thought though, that we’d take a different slant with our notes this time. Rather than add our musings on the whisky, we thought we’d collect everyones tweets (thanks to Billy for the link) and create a Wordle for each whisky so that you can see all the tweets about a particular expression of whisky. Let us know what you think about this concept! (Each of the images are clickable so that you can read all of the text!)

Balblair 1969 Vintage [and a vertical tasting]

Balblair 1969 Vintage [and a vertical tasting]

A Balblair vertical tasting ending with the brand new 1969 vintage? Go on then. I am easily convinced and it is well worth the Tuesday evening trip down to London to join a handful of journalists and bloggers to celebrate the occasion. To top it off I end up sitting with Billy (aka Cowfish) and Ian (of 101 whiskies fame). And then Balblair threw in some great whisky.
