Midlands Whisky Fest! 19th May 2012

Midlands Whisky Fest! 19th May 2012

The Midlands Whisky Fest! in Stratford had been in our diaries for some time, and it was with a great sense of excitment and expectation that we set off for our second experience of the event run by the Whisky Lounge and Vinology!

W is for…

W is for…

W is definitely for W Club – The Whisky Shop’s new membership club that gives you access to limited release bottlings, great competitions and some exclusive in-store whisky!  We popped along to see Craig, manager of Birmingham’s Whisky Shop to try some of the new bottles he had.  The focus of our mission this time was a new bottle out by Glen Garioch which was bottled excessively for the Whisky Shop!  There are only 187 bottles of the Glen Garioch 1978 and as it retails at a shade under £400 this was probably going to be our only experience of it.  Our thoughts are here:

BenRiach and Glendronach Masterclass [26 April – Birmingham]

BenRiach and Glendronach Masterclass [26 April – Birmingham]

Here’s a great event for your diary and its being held in Birmingham on 26 April!  The Birmingham Whisky Club will be hosting Stewart Buchanan who will be showcasing whisky from BenRiach and Glendronach.  You will be able to taste the BenRiach 12, BenRiach 16, BenRiach 17 Solstice, BenRiach 17 Septendecim, Glendronach 12, Glendronach 15, and the Glendronach 18.  Finally there will be something old and rare from BenRiach!

Cutty Sark Tweet Tasting

Cutty Sark Tweet Tasting

We were again fortunate enough to be invited along to the latest event in the Whisky Wire’s series of Tweet Tastings.  Up for tasting this time was a blend that we’d heard a lot about but had never tasted – Cutty Sark.  This was about to change as we were sent four generous samples of whisky including; Cutty Sark Blend, Cutty Sark 12, Cutty Sark 18 and the recently released Tam O’Shanter 25.  The tasting was again expertly led by Steve, and we were joined by Kirsteen Campbell, Master Blender at Cutty Sark who entertained us brilliantly with her insight into the whisky we were tasting as well as answering a lot of questions about the nuances of the whisky, its maturation and origins.

Highland Park Tweet Tasting

Highland Park Tweet Tasting

Well, what a week we’ve had at LivingRoomWhisky! Following a very successful evening with Craig, manager of Birmingham’s Whisky Store for our World Whisky Day Tasting, we were lucky enough to be chosen to take part in the Highland Park Tweet Tasting on Wednesday 28th March. These fantastic online tasting events are organised by Steve Rush of The Whisky Wire, be sure to follow him on Twitter if you don’t already!

World Whisky Day Tasting

World Whisky Day [27.03.12]

Well it was a mad rush; leaving work at 16:00, driving the 28 miles back to Birmingham, quick change, pick whisky up, train to town, Mac Donalds perfect pre-taste meal?) and at the Whisky Shop by 18:00 just in time for our first event! We’d organised this tasting with Craig, manager of Birmingham’s Whisky Shop, around the concept of trying whisky blind. Each guest would bring a bottle of whisky, hide the label and then allow each person to try while we pontificated as to what delights we were tasting! So what did we have? Unfortunately Mike was otherwise occupied so it was left to me (Jon) to hold the fort for LivingRoom Whisky.

World Whisky Day Tasting

We’ve got a great free event lined up for you to celebrate World Whisky Day.  We’ve teamed up with The Whisky Shop in Birmingham and are hosting a ‘Blind Tasting‘.  Simply bring a bottle of whisky from your collection to share with the other guests and we’ll wrap them up to hide the labels and so on. You’ll then have the opportunity to talk others through your offering, as well as dramming with all of the other whiskies available.  It’s a great chance to try some new and unusual whisky without having the preconceptions of what you like and what you don’t!  The identity of all whiskies will then be revealed!

The tasting will start at 18:00 on Tuesday 27th March at the Whisky Shop in Birmingham; places are free but extremely limited and will be offered on a first come first served basis.  To secure your place simply DM us on Twitter @LRWhisky and we will respond to let you know if you have been successful!  So come along, support World Whisky Day, get to know the authors of this blog (!) and drink some cracking whisky!  We can’t wait to see you!
