So what did we think of the W Club exclusive 1978 Glen Garioch? It is bottled at 51.7% and available for £399 so we were keen to try it! Our anticipation had increased since we had taken part in one the The Whisky Wires Tweet Tastings in January that focussed on Glen Garioch where we were delighted to try four of their releases.
The 1978 was full of orange on the nose and this was combined with hazelnut, and some very fragrant heather and honey – very reminiscent of a spring walk in the Scottish countryside – lovely! The initial taste was quite metallic with some tin coming through. This soon disapted though and we were transported to an English meadow full of apples and pears with more of that heather. There was a little oiliness and some heat at the back of the throat. Water opened it up slightly providing some praline and additional sweetness. The finish was a little briny, but also contained some fruity blackberries and was surpassingly buttery too.
It was a real treat to sample this so thanks to Craig, and it must be said that it officially rocks to be a W Club member!
