Glengoyne have recently updated their range of core whiskies, bringing out brand new expressions including a 15 year old, 18 year old and cask strength release. This is more than bringing out new whisky though; the new whiskies are naturally coloured, and the branding has been updated and looks fabulous, and the whole package exudes quality and luxury – a great upgrade! We’ve been fortunate enough to have been sent samples of the above mentioned whiskies so over the next few weeks we’ll hopefully be reviewing them all and giving you our thoughts on what we think of them.
This post focuses on what is arguably the pinnacle of the range – the 18 year old. This whisky is bottled at 43% and retails at £74.99. It has spent a large proportion of its life in first fill Spanish sherry casks which gives it a lovely rich hue when poured into the glass.
Upon nosing we found it to be warming and luxurious – it reminded us of melting fudge and caramelised banana – a real autumnal dessert of a whisky. We also found some of the more typical Glengoyne notes of red apple skins and oranges. The sherried influence also came thorough strongly which is as a result of the long maturation in the Spanish oak – it’s a full on nose that you could spent the night exploring.
The palate was mellow to being with; really soft and gentle, gently drawing you in as the fruity flavours detected on the nose continue in the same vein. It gives way to sticky treacle toffee and Aztec chilli chocolate. It then delivers a final hit of prunes and even richer 100% darker chocolate. On the finish we found it to be a touch bitter before dark chocolate left us wanting more!
This is a rich whisky that would go well with this time of year as the nights draw in, and as Christmas looms on the horison – we’d recommend it as a pre dessert whisky for Christmas day. Your family would love you and the whisky!
