Highland Park 18 is one of those standout drams; an almost once in a lifetime event that hits you squarely between the eyes when you can’t believe a whisky this good is always available and not something that you have to queue hours for at a festival, or be first to click online to get hold of a bottle. It has been declared to be the ‘The world’s best spirit’ and it is one of our all time favourite whiskies. You almost don’t need to read the few words we have penned here, and they won’t do it justice; you really should be buying a bottle! We were eager to revisit it!
From opening the bottle and seeing its golden colour, it was as appealing as ever. The nose is big and rich, offering toffee, oak, and spice. It develops with time in the glass and becomes even more pronounced. The palate was stunning, velvety and luxurious; intense chocolate and dark cherries, then more rich red fruits, marzipan and grated honeycomb. What more to say… The finish was delightful, think of a coastal walk with light sea breeze and wisps of a dying fire.
It’s available for less than £60 and there aren’t many other whiskies that can compete with it on those terms. Fact.
