After the beautiful whiskies we had already tried as part of our Highland Park Tweet Tasting, our expectations for the 30 year old increased significantly. This was a whisky that we’d been wanting to try for years. Highland Park do a wonderful job keeping stock to allow this to be a regular feature of their family and we couldn’t believe how fortunate we’d been to be given a chance to sample it as part of the online tasting. And better still we were tasting with friends from across the world rather than on our own – a great experience.
This wonderful dram did not disappoint! Its a marriage of casks coming in at a very respectable and drinkable 48.1%. The nose was rich, woody and sherried. As it sat, we had candied orange peel, cinnamon, then scents of cherry, honey and dark chocolate. Comforting and familiar; like coming in from the cold to a real wood fire. This is a beautifully balanced whisky, the palate is rich and full bodied but not heavy or over-whelming. It is earth, peat, fire and smoke but so much more… stewed fruit, dark cocoa, spice, cigar. Beautiful, just beautiful. The finish was long, bringing with it ginger and the gentle wisps of smoke from a beachside bbq – still clinging to its coastal roots.
We’ve still got a dram left in the bottle and will be cherishing it for a little time – waiting for the right moment to relive this experience.
