We recently reviewed the Kilchoman Inaugural 100% Islay release and we were blown away by it, so were now delighted to have the opportunity to sample the 2nd release of the 100% Islay ‘Barley to Bottle Series]. This time the whisky is an equal vatting of 3 and 4 year old whisky matured in fresh bourbon barrels.
The nose is initially less smokey that the inaugural release with a lot more vanilla present. The damp grass smell remains, but this time it is accompanied by milk and aniseed. We were then hit by the trademark peat notes before being greeted by hessian and menthol. The overriding sensation was that of freshly barbecued scallops in the rain – the freshness and smokey sweetness really coming through.
The palate was huge – we were rocked by an almighty chilli hit mixed in with pepper to spice it up even further. This whisky was smokey, peaty and very cloying to the sides of the mouth – in fact it gave me a bit of a head rush [Jon]. As we spent time with it, it softened revealing custard and some oaky vanilla flavours.
The finish was long and sweet, and that chilli heat comes back to warm you – this would be a great dram for a windswept rainy evening!
The second release of Kiclhoman 100% Islay is definitely part of the same family; it draws you in softly, welcomes you and then surprises you by unleasing all that it has on you. It rewards you for wanting to stay and the result is friendship and delight. You now can’t wait to see if there is a 3rd release, another member of the family that you have yet to be introduced too!
