Whisky Live 2013

Whisky Live 2013

This was my first visit to Whisky Live and right at the start of this post I can tell you that it is now firmly in the calendar and I will be there again next year. I had a wonderful day out that included an early morning battle against the 4 inches of snow that fell in Birmingham the night before. Thankfully the public transport network was more of less holding up and I made my way down to London without too many hitches for a day that would be split into three parts.

Glenfiddich Tasting [A Solera Deconstruction]

Glenfiddich Tasting [A Solera Deconstruction]

I recently had another great evening at the Soho Whisky Rooms in London. This time I was there for a deconstruction of the Glenfiddich 15 year old Solera bottling – an opportunity to examine the cask components that make up this delicious whisky in the company on Jamie Milne (Glenfiddich Brand Ambassador). Upon arrival I was handed a glass of 12 year old and set about meeting new and old friends alike – special mentions to Ben and Cat (Master of Malt), Alwynne (Miss Whisky), Marcin, Ryan, Kirsty and Fleur. Jamie was excellent throughout; very knowledgable, humorous and dealt with the banter well!

I’m proud to be a member of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society [SMWS].  I love the fact that I have access to some great single cask, cask strength whiskies that no-one else can buy – I’ve had some fabulous whisky including a Bladnoch 20, Port Charlotte 7, Glen Moray 20 – and all at reasonable prices.  I love the fact that I can go down to London and sit in a private members lounge and drink the whisky in a beautiful bar.  And now I love the fact that I can read their brilliant magazine on my iPad as they continue to embrace technology.

Suntory Cocktails in London!

Suntory Cocktails in London!

Friday was a good day!  Sharon (my wife) and I (Jon) headed down to London for a packed day of tourist and whisky related activities. We had a lovely lunch cruise on the Thames, a trip on the London Eye and dinner in Covent Garden, but what you’ll really be interested in is what we did at the Corinthia!  By rights we were lucky to be there as it was my co-blogger Mike who had won the competition ran by Alwynne of Miss Whisky – picking up a lovely bottle of Hibiki 17 and a day out in London sampling Japanese whisky and enjoying cocktails in a private lesson.  Fortunately for us Mike is a teacher, and even more fortunately it wasn’t holiday time for teachers, so he couldn’t get the time off work paving the way for Sharon and I to go down and step in!
